7 Quick Tips to Help You Start A SUCCESSFUL Blog

You have heard this time and time again, but it still holds true today...  If you are not blogging, you are missing out on some very important opportunities for your business.  A blog is a wonderful asset to your business and a key piece of your marketing infrastructure but do you know what it takes to start a successful blog?  So while you are still in the 'thinking' phase of your next blog project, let's discuss the necessary tasks you will be required to perform if you want your blog to be a success.  Read on for 7 quick tips to get you started off on the right track.

To Start A Successful Blog You Will Need To:

1. Write Great Content

In order to gain readers, the content of your blog has to be of value to them.  Whether you are aiming to inspire, educate or entertain… content is key.  Offer your readership amazing content and they will surely be back for more. If you can help a reader in some way, they will be grateful and more likely to subscribe to your future articles.  

What does it mean to deliver great content? 

  • Be original and provide original content.  Do not simply copy another blogger’s ideas but instead research a topic and come up with your own words.  
  • Continue to improve your writing skills because there is always room for improvement!
  • Proofread your articles to ensure that there are no grammatical errors or spelling mistakes.  (This is so important because any mistakes and the grammar police will hunt you down.)
  • Be sure to maintain a high standard of quality for your blog. If your post is not ready, do not publish it. 

2. Be Consistent

Be sure to publish articles on a consistent basis by deciding on a posting schedule and sticking to it.  A common mistake that beginners make is to launch a blog, get all hyper about it, announce it all over social media, publish one or two posts and forget about it.  Or they publish too often when a blog is first launched, but drop off with their postings later on.  I’m guilty of both of these mistakes myself!  So set yourself a reasonable schedule that you can keep up with while still managing your business effectively.

3. Start Building an Email List

Be sure to include an email list signup on your blog.  This will help begin to build your list and your following.  When someone signs up as an email subscriber, they are telling you that they are interested in your content and offerings.  You can drive additional traffic to your blog posts and promote related products and services by keeping your subscribers informed of your latest posts.

4. Build a Following on Social Media

Social Media is a great way to increase traffic and promote your blog.  Engage in discussions and always include links to your social media profiles on your blog to encourage readers to follow you. Be sure when you do interact on social media, that your comments are genuine and do not make the mistake of simply promoting yourself or your blog because it will only be marked as spam.

5. Use a Blog (Editorial) Calendar

There are many different options when it comes to your calendar.  Decide what works best for you and USE IT!  Think of your Blog Editorial Calendar as a daily organizer/journal.  It helps you map out your blog posting strategy and helps you decide what you needed to be blogging about each week. 

How to Use an Editorial Calendar Correctly:

  • Sit down and plan out the next two weeks of blog posts
  • Come up with at least 2 to 3 post topics per week 
  • Decide the best days and times to publish your posts
  • Write them on the calendar for the day when you want to post them
  • Put a reminder to yourself when to begin writing each post so you allow plenty of time for writing, editing and proof reading

6. Engage with Your Readers

A big part of being a successful blogger is connecting with your readers. You should always try to engage with your readers by social media, email and by responding to their comments.   This helps create a loyal readership that spreads the word about your blog. It also helps build trust and makes readers more responsive to any products and services you promote in the future.     

7. Give it Time

Be aware that even though you may be writing great articles every week, it still takes time to grow your readership. To say that you will need to be patient is an understatement.  Even though there is no guarantee that your blog will be a success, you still need to give it plenty of time to gain momentum.  Also be sure to promote your blog by connecting with other bloggers and perhaps offering to collaborate or be a guest blogger.  I like to think of blogging as helping others.  It also helps me plan my marketing efforts, promotions and streamline my activities to mesh with my business goals.
